Returning to Thassos this June for the 8th. time in 9 years, but doing it the hard way for the first time. Thomson prices are in my opinion quite outrageous now, (especially flight only). So we’ve booked Easyjet from Gatwick to Thessaloniki for £112.00 each return – bargain!! and reserved a car for 250 euros between 4 of us for the week. Hopefully we can get to Keromoti within a couple of hours, and expect to be downing the Mythos on our sea front balcony by 5p.m. latest.

We’ve done a deal for 2 brand new seafront apartments by the beach at Scala Potomias for 50 euros a night (which was a great price when we booked it last year – but a lot more now)! But can’t wait to return. We’re taking 2 Thassos ‘virgins’ with us – (I’m sure you know what I mean – 1st. time visitors)!, and no doubt they’ll fall in love with the place as everyone else always does.

So sad to learn of the passing of David, I didn’t know him personally but had spoken to him on a couple of occassions and he had a real passion for Thassos which was reflected in his dedication to this site, and I’m sure we are all delighted that it has now been resurrected by his son in law. Please support it, and let all the old contributors know that it’s back up on line.
Might meet one or two of you in June.
Cheers, Peter Kerrone.

This is a great little site and will be returning to see any additional items. One thing I’d like to point out (as I found this out only recently) is that the Emerald Studios in Golden Beach will be described in Thomson Brochures as Smaragdi II – meaning Emerald, I assume, as the apartments are part of the Emerald Hotel complex, which is operated on behalf of Thomas Cook, Thomson’s rivals.

This June will be our 8th time to holiday at Golden Beach, and we look forward to it now as much as ever.In fact we know the place so well, each time we go,we love it more.
For us, our holiday begins the moment we leave Kavala Airport,as the smooth transfer by coach, and then ferry to our resort is delightful.
The first thing we do on arrival is to have an ice cold beer at Fedra, where we usually stay, and say “Hi”to Niko and his family and all the staff.
We have been to many other places on holiday, but always come back to Thassos where we’re glad to say not much has changed in almost 20 years.
Roll on June…..

ThassosThe island most probably took its name from the Phoenician Thassos.

According to mythology, he came to the island with Cadmus in search of his sister Europa who had been abducted by Zeus, who had appeared in the form of a bull.

After much searching and disappointment, Cadmus received a prophecy from the Oracle at Delphi, and returned to the Aegean to build the town of Thebes.

Thassos was enchanted by the beauty and breathtaking sunsets of the island which would take his name and decided to stay.

ThassosHe stayed there with his men, founded settlements and employed the locals in exploiting the gold mines, principally situated on the eastern side of the island.

Colonisation by the Phoenicians is recorded by Herodotus as being around 1600 – 1500 BC, and these records are now considered the most accurate indication available.

For Julie Flaherty, loved the story of your trip and details of the rental accomodation. At last Thassos is rsponding to this demand for holiday villas, houses and apartments. We’ve booked for August/September, with BA flights, half the cost of a package. First web site with rentals is now live, check it out. www.thassos-holiday-rentals.com! Good luck.

We just thought we would offer a little encouragement to those who are contemplating traveling independently to Thassos. Like many contributors to the site, we have visited Thassos many times, and have got there by many various ways. Last May, we paid £600.00 to Thomsons for flight only to Kavala, actually, at this time, we met Julie Flaherty and her family, and understood how difficult it was for them to return to Thassos. We decided to try the British Airways flight to Thessaloniki, as we consider Thomsons too expensive , and were impressed. The extra leg room, extra baggage allowance, in-flight refreshments included in the price, much more pleasant than the charter flights and the budget airlines. Until such time as there is a direct scheduled flight to Kavala, we will always travel this way. The flight gets you there in plenty of time to get to the ferry the same evening, the road from the airport leads to the ring road and from there to Kavala. Without rushing,we arrived in Keramoti in less than three hours, the road is good and the scenery superb (it is worth taking a little extra time on the return journey, to be able to stop at a couple of places, as the road mostly follows the coast, the views are great). Once at Keramoti and on the ferry, Thassos is in sight, and you know you are almost home! Anyway we are returning in May going this way and look forward to seeing again, our many friends in Thassos. We had pre-arranged our hire car, it was waiting for us, so it all went smoothly.
