THASSOS is one of the most northerly of Greek holiday destinations.

The journey to Thassos really is part of the holiday, involving as it does for most people a flight, probably to Kavala, as many people from the UK will be travelling with a package tour company, with then a ferry trip to reach the island.

In practice, this means quite a bit of travel time – the moving bits include a three and a half hour flight from the U.K., a short bus ride to the ferry port of Keramoti for those on a package deal, a forty minute ferry trip to Thassos Town, and a transfer of 30 to 45 minutes to a hotel or apartment on Thassos.

The non-moving hanging around can be a bit frustrating, involving not just the usual airport time but also a wait of anything up to 2 hours for the ferry, depending on whether you have just missed one. This extends the time in transit quite a bit, but there’s really nothing much to be done about it, and one really has to just go with the flow.

The travel time can at first sight seem a little daunting, but the tour operators will look after both people and luggage to remove much of the potential pain from the process, and Thassos really is worth the effort.
