The main industries on the island, other than tourism, include:
Quarrying - white marble is quarried on the island with the massive blocks transported to the mainland daily via the Thassos Town/Keramotti ferry
Olives – there are thousands of olive trees on the island, with processing through local cooperatives to produce olive oil
Beekeeping – bee hives will be seen all over the island, and the sound of the bees at work is very noticeable, with the local produce on sale in many shops
Fishing – local fishermen can be seen processing their catch, and tending their nets at all the harbours (skala’s) around the island
Ouzo – produced by the island cooperative, the local ouzo can be bought in the mini-markets
Wine – Thassos wine was praised by Antidotus in 4 BC “Regale me with Thassian wine, for whatever ails my heart is cured the moment I drink it”. The god Dionysios said “I believe that the Thassian wine that smells of apples is the best of all wines”.

This June will be our 8th time to holiday at Golden Beach, and we look forward to it now as much as ever.In fact we know the place so well, each time we go,we love it more.
For us, our holiday begins the moment we leave Kavala Airport,as the smooth transfer by coach, and then ferry to our resort is delightful.
The first thing we do on arrival is to have an ice cold beer at Fedra, where we usually stay, and say “Hi”to Niko and his family and all the staff.
We have been to many other places on holiday, but always come back to Thassos where we’re glad to say not much has changed in almost 20 years.
Roll on June…..

The island most probably took its name from the Phoenician Thassos.
According to mythology, he came to the island with Cadmus in search of his sister Europa who had been abducted by Zeus, who had appeared in the form of a bull.
After much searching and disappointment, Cadmus received a prophecy from the Oracle at Delphi, and returned to the Aegean to build the town of Thebes.
Thassos was enchanted by the beauty and breathtaking sunsets of the island which would take his name and decided to stay.
He stayed there with his men, founded settlements and employed the locals in exploiting the gold mines, principally situated on the eastern side of the island.
Colonisation by the Phoenicians is recorded by Herodotus as being around 1600 – 1500 BC, and these records are now considered the most accurate indication available.

We recommend the Steki Taverna and accommodation to everyone who loves great Greek food and friendly, quality service. Katerina and Jorgos make you feel at home and look after you very well. We have stayed with them twice and will do again on our next visit to the island. The last time was a couple of years ago and we still keep in touch with them.

For Julie Flaherty, loved the story of your trip and details of the rental accomodation. At last Thassos is rsponding to this demand for holiday villas, houses and apartments. We’ve booked for August/September, with BA flights, half the cost of a package. First web site with rentals is now live, check it out. www.thassos-holiday-rentals.com! Good luck.

We were totally thrilled with our visit to the island of Thassos in October of this year. what a place. We stayed at the Galaxy hotel in Thassos town and the owners Yanni and Poppy were very friendly and made us feel at home. Our Thomson rep Lizzy was very helpful and friendly too. We hired a car and drove around the island which i highly recommend. Our favorite beaches were Paradise and Tripiti. Our favorate place to relax in the day was Karnagio a cafe right at the end of the town, passed the old harbour. Our favorate bar was Central bar in town and by far our favorite place to eat was Thassian restaurant in the centre of town. the owners katrin and Rigis were so friendly and the food was delicious every time. We also liked Zodiac and Syrtakis but did not think much of Twins or Doukas.
All in all an amazing place to go. we will be back!!!!!
